Sorry, but I don nok speak Portuguese very well, and my reading is limited.
I am new, so hope I am doing this correct.
I have a Renault Grand Scenic and would like some help, due to my poor language skills.

Does any know how/where to find info regarding export or my car, as I would like to bring it with me to my home country?
I know this might be wrong place, but maybe admins can move this to where it might fit better?

Muinto Obrigado

Two important questions, are you in Portugal and want to take your car to the country of origin, or are you in your country of origin and want to come to Portugal?
Within the European Union, the rules are made easier.
If you come to work in Portugal for a short period of time, keeping your tax residency in the country of origin, you do not need to worry, the vehicle is allowed to stay for 6 months for every 12 months.
If it is definitely, after you have a tax residency in Portugal, you have to legalize the vehicle.

It's important to know the from and to country.
As far as I'm aware, if you're planning bringing your vehicle with you to Portugal and will be the 1st year according to E.U laws you can benefit hugely from registering the car with the country plates. I believe works both ways as long as you're within the E.U

Yes, I know the import option if you have foreign car brought into Portugal.
Sadly it is the other way around - I am going with a portuguĂŞs car back to my home country. It is the only country with higher car taxes than Portugal in EU - denmark.

DK  has strict import, and you cannot bring car tax-free with you back. They will calculate the used car value, and then you have to pay tax of that. If you export a car from DK, you can get some of the residual tax in the car back if you prove the buyer is from outside DK and the car leaves DK, I need to know how to do this in Portugal.

I need to know where I can apply to get tax back as I am exporting from Portugal to denmark.
FYI -The cost in DK for import is 5200 eur.

I called autoridade today to ask. First time they hung up, second I got to a nice lady speaking English, that send me to Alfândega departamento - who then hung up. It is a bit hard to figure out as my language skills are limited.

Any input would be helpful, thamks.

I know that struggle. My swedish friends living here go through the same hurdles whenever speaking with governmental institutions. It's appalling.

You wish to know if there's anything in Portugal that could assist you taking your car back to Denmark, correct?

Hi,

If the goal is to export the car from Portugal and with Portuguese, I guess someone in Denmark with knowledge of Danish import laws or customs requirements will provide better help.

In any case I found the following information that might give you some insights:

“Find out about bringing a car or motorcycle into the country, including import taxes and duties...

If a car is registered in a country outside of Denmark, it must be re-registered within 14 days of arrival if taking up residence in Denmark, or within 14 days of obtaining a CPR number (personal identification number). A registration tax must be paid.

A resident is someone who is planning to stay in Denmark for more than 365 days, or who has stayed in Denmark for 365 days within the previous 24 months.

Registration of all vehicles is carried out by the Central Register for Motor Vehicles (Centralregisteret for Motorkøretøjer), which is administered by the Danish government body, SKAT, which is responsible for tax, customs and duties.

Comprehensive information on importing a vehicle can be obtained from SKAT on their website: Importing a vehicle. Information can also be obtained by telephone, Tel: 72 22 27 96

Import Procedure
The process of importing a vehicle to Denmark has four main steps:
Apply for a permit to drive a foreign registered vehicle in Denmark.
Carry out an ordinary technical inspection and a customs inspection.
Register the vehicle with SKAT.
Pay registration tax and any applicable customs duties and VAT.
To calculate the amount of the registration tax in advance, a binding ruling can be requested from SKAT. This process can take up to seven weeks.
Permit to Drive a Foreign Registered Vehicle in Denmark
The first step for all vehicles is to fill in the application for a permit to drive a foreign registered vehicle in Denmark.
To download the application for permit to drive a foreign registered vehicle in Denmark (form 21.059E) PDF
The application form must be sent, along with a photocopy of proof of employment, study or residence, and a photocopy of the vehicle's registration document, to the following address:
SKAT, Helgeshøj, Allé 9, 2630, Taastrup
Once the vehicle owner receives the permit it must be carried at all times when driving, until the vehicle has been registered. Driving without the permit can incur a fine.
Vehicle Inspection
In order to register a vehicle on Danish number plates, the vehicle must undergo an ordinary technical inspection and a customs inspection. This must be conducted by an authorised inspection centre (synshall), and can be carried out by the Danish Motorist Association - FDM. The inspection is to determine the vehicle's identity, number of kilometres, features and general condition.
The inspection can be booked online (in Danish)
The vehicle's registration certificate and the service manual for the vehicle should be taken to the inspection.
Registering the Vehicle
Once the vehicle has passed the inspection, the following documents should be taken to the nearest tax (SKAT) centre:
Vehicle inspection form and the customs inspection form issued by the inspection authority
Foreign registration certificate
Proof of payment of customs duty (if importing a vehicle from a non-EU country)
Application for payment of registration tax.
To download the form: Payment of registration tax
Deposit for registration tax
By law, all vehicles must have liability insurance before they can be registered.”

Hope it helps, as I have no idea regarding Danish regulations for this topic.

Not sure if the above is only applicable to cars originating from outside of Europe. Seems weird to have to do so much to simply bring in a car from another European country. Maybe try calling the phone number indicated there, since you’ll be in contact with the Danish customs or vehicle registration authorities.

In other news, if you wanted to know if you can get a refund on any taxes you paid here in regards to that car (TVA, ISV, etc), I don’t think so. TVA (IVA) can be deducted in some circumstances if the car is registered to a company as a “service car”. This is not applicable to privately owned cars or import/export of said cars.

Check the E.U regulations since memebrs have to a abide. Which Portugal doesn't do. Free circulation of gooda within country-members.

Hello again,

Thanks for all the inputs so far.

Just a small update - been struggling with the alfândega; they do reply fast, but not on the questions asked..

It looks like I need to use the point 4 in this procedure, at least for the cancellation, which is also needed:
http://www.imt-ip.pt/sites/IMTT/Portugues/Veiculos/CancelamentoMatricula/Codigoestrada/Paginas/CodigodaEstrada.aspx

On then danish side of things, I have had no problems so far.
The car has been inspected, approved and the DK tax has been paid (5200 EUR  ).
So now it has double taxation, actually it was more expensive to buy the car in PT than a similar car with plates in DK :-S.
Depreciation of a car in DK must be higher due to the bad weather, i.e. they get rusty.
So now the proud owner of the most expensive Renault Grand Scenic in DK

How can it be legal to require double tax of a car when moving within EU? I do not know who is wrong here, but at least in DK you get taxed on import of a car, and car tax back when export (something like if import tax is 10000 eur you would get 8500 eur on export, they keep at least 15% for their trouble). So if I later export it from DK, I will be able to get some of that back.

source: export in 5 easy steps: https://skat.dk/skat.aspx?oid=2244356 (and similar in import: https://skat.dk/skat.aspx?oid=2244355)
I do not normally think the tax authority in DK is user friendly, but in this case, they actually provide a nice guide and it is available in English.

I will update when I get closer to a solution on PT side of things.

Obrigado

In Portugal it's common for the double taxes and has been a common topic. End-consumers have been quoting the EU law on free transit of goods within members.

Allegedly, Portugal is paying fines on double taxing or ignoring. Other countries don't know their reality.

What is missing for your luxurious Scenic to be fully legal in DK?
